Newell Highway Realignment
Notice of works around South Tomingley
Project information
What is the project?
We are working on realigning a section of the Newell Highway south of Tomingley to support the expansion of Tomingley Gold Mine in Central West NSW.
This realignment is needed to safely divert traffic around the growing mining operations, ensuring the highway remains accessible and safe for everyone.
What are we doing?
We are constructing a new 8.1km stretch of highway from the Back Tomingley West Road to the Tomingley South Rest Area, where the new section reconnects with the existing highway.
During construction works, we may need to implement temporary changes to the highway, such as detours around the works, to manage the highway traffic.
We will keep the community and road users informed about our works and any activities that may affect them.
How will we do it?
The project will be completed in stages, with works to be carried out from October 2025 through 2026.
Work will take place from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, with no work scheduled on Sundays or public holidays.
To ensure traffic continues to flow safely during the project, we will build temporary sections of road, particularly where the new highway connects with the existing Newell Highway.
We will also use signage, including variable message boards, alongside our traffic management measures, to ensure that regular updates are provided. This will keep road users and residents informed about the progress and any changes that may affect them.
Who are we?
Alkane’s Tomingley Gold Operations is an open cut and underground gold mine lying just south of Tomingley village and approximately 50km southwest of Dubbo in Central West NSW. The operation commenced production in 2014 and is now extending mining operations to new resources immediately south of the existing mine.
The Tomingley Gold Extension Project is a NSW State Significant Development being conducted with consideration for the environment and the community. Robson Civil Projects has been engaged to carry out the construction works for the realignment of the Newell Highway.
Robson Civil Projects is a company with a locally based workforce and extensive experience in civil engineering projects. They are committed to completing the project safely and on time with as little disruption as possible to the community.
Project background
Tomingley Gold Operations, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alkane, is extending its mining operations by developing the San Antonio and Roswell (SAR) resources, just south of the current mine.
This project includes developing an underground mine at Roswell, as well as a large open cut mine. To access the deposits, which lie underneath the existing Newell Highway, we are realigning the highway to divert around the new operation.
The Tomingley Gold Extension Project was approved by the New South Wales Minister for Planning on 21 February 2023, and TGO has development consent until the end of 2032. This extension will create more jobs for the region and strengthen the relationships with the local community.

December Update
Since early Nov 2025 we have been carrying out following works:
- Main work compound entrance upgrade (Kenilworth property), Newell Highway: Widening the entrance of the temporary main work compound for project vehicles. During construction of this safety upgrade, temporary safety barriers will be in place along the Newell Highway with reduced-speed signs. Temporary traffic signals will also be used.
- Offline works: Crews will continue topsoil stripping, clearing and grubbing, excavation down to foundation level, material testing, and placing and compacting materials as part of the new road construction.
- Back Tomingley West Road: Work will continue with topsoil stripping, clearing, and related preparation activities, including traffic management for this road.

FAQs
Alkane’s Tomingley Gold Mine is expanding, requiring a realignment of the Newell Highway. The project will involve:
- An 8km realignment of the Newell Highway to deviate around future mining operations.
- Tie-in works with the existing Newell Highway and local roads.
- Construction work started on 23 October 2025 and will continue for 15 months (weather permitting).
- Work hours will be Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, and Saturdays between 8am and 1pm (weather permitting) with no work scheduled on Sundays or public holidays.
During the tie-in work there will be temporary traffic changes to ensure a safe work zone, including:
- A reduced speed of 40km/h and single lane closures during set up of work areas.
- A reduced speed of 80km/h during work hours for all other road works.
- A reduced speed of 80km/h outside of work hours (both lanes of the Newell Highway open).
Please allow up to five minutes of extra travel time during the tie-in works and always follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.
Access to the South Tomingley Rest Area may be temporarily blocked for a limited period during construction of the tie-in near this location. We will provide advance notice of timing for any closure of the rest area. At such times we encourage road users to use either the North Peak Hill Rest Area (where toilets will be temporarily established) or the Tomingley Rest Area.
When the new section of the Newell Highway is to be tied-in to the new road, traffic switches will be put in place to safely manage traffic around the work.
Traffic controllers will be on site to assist motorists and pedestrians.
Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.
In May 2025, in preparation for construction, we established the main work compound within the mine area west of the Newell Highway, near the Kyalite Road intersection.
On 23 October 2025 we commenced temporary works on the Newell Highway. The work is expected to take 15 months (weather permitting).
We do not foresee that we will need to close the highway. Most of the work will occur off the Newell Highway, southwest of the existing Tomingley Gold Mine. However, work will be most visible to motorists on the highway near the South Tomingley Rest Area and at the Back Tomingley West Road intersection.
At both these locations a short section of temporary road pavement will be constructed to the east to ensure traffic continues to flow safely during the realignment. Traffic will be shifted onto these to complete each tie-in to the realigned Newell Highway.
Road work for the tie-in near the South Tomingley Rest Area will commence around Easter 2026 for up to 10 months, weather permitting, and will be followed by the tie-in works at the Back Tomingley West Road intersection.
We will keep the community and road users informed about our work and any activities that may affect them. If you have any questions, or concerns about the work please contact us via the details provided above.
